Ask yourself the following twenty questions. If you answer yes to at least 50% of them then legal nurse consulting is probably right for you.

  1. Do you enjoy learning new things and can devote sufficient time to master new skills?
  2. Do you get a greater understanding from material that is presented in an organized manner?
  3. Do you like working with financial data?
  4. Are you good at critical thinking and inductive reasoning?
  5. Do you generally meet your deadlines (those self imposed or imposed by others)?
  6. Do you like working by yourself, in a quiet setting, sitting for long periods of time?
  7. Do you consider yourself motivated for success?
  8. Can you prioritize your work?
  9. Can you multitask?
  10. Do you have above average computer skills (particularly spreadsheets and document writers)?
  11. Do you like to do research on the Internet?
  12. Are you a perfectionist?
  13. Are you a risk taker?
  14. Do you find the thought of networking and promoting yourself invigorating?
  15. Would your supervisor consider you patient and persistent?
  16. Are you a good listener?
  17. Can you explain complex medical issues to people who do not have a medical background?
  18. Are you flexible?
  19. Are you comfortable questioning the assumptions of people with advance degrees (e.g. lawyers, physicians, accountants)?
  20. Do you know the difference between a paralegal, legal assistant, and a legal nurse consultant?

Answering yes to fewer than 50% of the above questions does not mean that you won’t do well as a legal nurse consultant. It does mean however, that it may be a bit more difficult for you.
